Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a large cargo ship early Tuesday morning. As residents of the Bay Area, where massive ships pass under heavily traveled bridges daily, this tragedy hit close to home for many.
My colleague, The Reverend Dr. John Ballanger of Woodbrook Baptist Church in Baltimore, wrote these words after the incident.
when you wake up to nightmare horror
and you imagine the crew on the ship as the power went off
and the distress calls desperately made
and the traffic halted
so the tragedy did not encompass even more individuals—
more families and loved ones
and the construction workers on the bridge
as it started to collapse
and those still missing and their loved ones
and then at such another level
it feels wrong to even think too much about
all the logistics ahead
and the traffic
and the port
but it’s all about the connectedness of a city
and people and a state and a country and a world
who too much allow themselves to feel disconnected—
be made to feel disconnected
and you pray for that connectedness—
that it be allowed to be now … redemptive
within the loss and the grief and the brokenness

We join with John in prayer for all impacted by this terrible accident.
