Update, February 4, 2021
Ash Wednesday (February 17th), the first day of the season of Lent, is now thirteen days away. Predictably, our Ash Wednesday observance will be different this year. The focus will be threefold.
1. From 12:00p.m. – 1:00p.m. and from 5:00p.m. – 6:00p.m you are invited to a Drive-up/Walk-up Communion Service in front of the church. Of course, we will wear masks and observe social distance.
2. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, and occasionally throughout the Lent, there will be reflections from members of our community in the daily email updates. The reflections will focus on the words of National Youth Poet Laureate, Amanda Gorman, “And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us, but what stands before us. We close the divide, because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside. We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another. We seek to harm none and harmony for all.”
How do the words of the poet speak to you? What “arms” do you feel led to lay down? In what ways do you feel led to reach out your arms to others?
Please send your responses to jim@labcoakland.org by February 15.
3. Wednesday Prayer and Bible Study will meet on Zoom at 10:30 on the 17th.
Central to Lent this year will be the celebrations of African American History month (February) and Womens History Month (March). Easter will on April 4th this year.
