Midweek Message

Tuesday of Holy Week – 2022

Jim Hopkins

April 11, 2022

Family,

We will be reading from I John in our Tuesday and Wednesday Bible Studies this week. Likely written around 100 CE to a community that had formed around John, the Beloved Disciple, this instruction reminds the second and third generation members of this community of two central beliefs – “God is Light” and “God is Love.”

The letter also cautions against any suggestion that Jesus was less than fully human.

I John is fitting reading for Holy Week for in 2:8 it speaks of the new commandment Jesus gave his disciples to love one another in John 13:34. This new commandment, or new mandate, is the root of the name Maundy (mandate) Thursday.

It also proclaims the theological and ethical truths at the heart of this week. This is how we know love: Jesus laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. (3:16, CEB)

May we love one another as Jesus loved us,

Pastor Jim

Faith In Action East Bay believes that one we demonstrate love is to work for justice. In Alameda county, a sheriff’s office that is accountable to the public is a key justice issue. Below is an important invitation.
