Family,
Greetings on this last day of August 2021.
This Sunday, September 5th, is Labor Day Sunday. I trust that you will join in us for worship via one of our three platforms – in-person, Zoom, YouTube livestream. My sermon will be “There Is No Such Thing As Unskilled Labor.” As part of the sermon I consider the frequently quoted biblical passage “If anyone refuses to work, they shouldn’t eat.” (II Thessalonians 3:10b). I will also quote from a recent Atlantic article, “Low-Skill Workers Aren’t a Problem to Be Fixed,” by Annie Lowrey. She writes, “It is a cancerous little phrase, low-skill. As the pandemic ends and the economy re-opens, we need to leave it behind.”
Communion will be part of worship on Sunday.
Following worship at 11:45 there will be two Christian Education opportunities (just like old times!). They will both be on Zoom as well as in person.
PUBLIC WITNESS FORUMS
On the first Sundays of the month, Pastor Allison will host a Public Witness Forum discussing various ways to engage in public witness. These forums will take place at church, following worship, as well as by zoom. Please note this is a different zoom link from the one for church, which hosts the Adult Bible Class at the same time. Our first forum, Sunday, September 5 will feature Minister Cherri Murphy, a faith organizer with Faith Alliance for a Moral Economy (FAME). Minister Murphy will share with us her work at FAME, the importance of honoring labor and our work together for a Moral Budget for Oakland.

The Adult Bible Study Class, led by Pastor Carolyn Matthews, meets in the Library and also on the LABC Zoom Channel used to access worship and other church meetings. The September themes are faith, commitment, prayer and leadership. The curriculum was written by Pastor Mindi Welton-Mitchell, an Evergreen Baptist Association pastor from Seattle.
Another Invitation – The LABC Re-Gathering Task Force, under the leadership of Marc Buffin, will meet on Zoom this Wednesday, September 1, at 7:00. We will be discussing how our re-gathering process has gone/is going. If you have some input we would be glad to have you attend. We will also be discussing the content of the next congregational survey.
Peace,
Pastor Jim
