Last October, I traveled to Israel/Palestine as part of a delegation whose goal was to unite resistance movements challenging the multitude of walls and barriers separating people, groups, cultures and races. I went as a representative of Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity, the organiza-tion that is helping Lakeshore find ways to live out our renewed identity as a Sanctuary Congregation.
Lakeshore has long been involved in the work of breaking down walls both vis-ible and invisible through our commitments to racial justice, economic justice, gender justice, and justice for sexual minorities. This trip helped me under-stand the global context within which we do our work, highlighting especially the roles of militarization, surveillance and police partnerships that promote and profit from wall building. As we continue our ministry in service to the one who has already destroyed the dividing walls of hostility (Eph. 2:14), I invite you to an event I am coordinating to bring together all who are working for jus-tice, freedom and equality across all borders.
Investing in Sanctuary:
Freedom to Stay, Freedom to Move, Freedom to Return
November 10, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
In a post-9/11 world, more than 70 border walls have been erected across the globe. Our rights of migration, mobility, and movement are under attack and we must defend our freedom to stay, freedom to move, and freedom to return. This event, uplifting voices of resistance, is fighting back against militarization, borders, and war. We hope to educate people about border walls across the globe, decry wall profiteers, and celebrate international resistance. We invite people from all walks of life and faiths to join us in community. The event will include speakers, live music, and photo exhibitions.
