Thanks to Pam and John Claassen for sponsoring a Lakeshore foursome (Declan Brown, Patrick Dawkins, Ethan Hopkins and me) in yesterday’s American Baptist Homes of West Foundation Golf Classic. It was a happy day spent in support of an important ministry, ABHOW’s low-income housing programs.
Thanks to Don Dresser and Mary Sue Meads for facilitating Garrett Zambrows visit to Oakland and LABC this weekend. Garrett is riding his bike across the country to call attention to American Baptist efforts to eliminate human trafficking. If you would like to join in a part of his ride meet at the Jamba Juice at the Powell Street Marketplace in Emeryville this Saturday, September 21 at 2:00. Don will lead the participants on a 6-8 mile ride onto the Bay Bridge Bicycle path and back.
The Ceasefire Call-In last Thursday was a powerful event. Please pray for the young “loved ones” and those who are working with them as they take steps toward a different way of life. They reconvene this Thursday evening.
My sermon this Sunday, “At the Heart of Intercession,” will be taken from Jeremiah 8:18-9:1. In this text Jeremiah asks the rhetorical question, “Is there no balm in Gilead?” The prophet’s point is that the pain of his people was beyond the ability of any medicine (balm) from Gilead (a town that produced balms, ointments and medication that were carried by trade caravans throughout the Mediterranean world) to address. I will note that like Jeremiah, faithful people and faithful communities are called to speak truth to suffering.
