A Hymn of Advent

Hail to the Lord’s Anointed

(This hymn of Advent also has strong social justice / concern themes.  The words are  based on Psalm 72. It was written by Scottish-born, later English-resident, Morovian-church member, hymn writer, poet and newspaper editor, James Montgomery (1771-1854), and  first published in 1821 as a Christmas hymn. With meter 7.6.7.6 D, tunes it is set to include: CRÜGER by German composer Johann Crüger (1598-1662); ELLACOMBE from Gesangbuch der herzogl wirtembergischen katholischen Hofkapelle (Württemberg, 1784, adapted by English organist William H. Monk (1823-1889))).

Psalm 72:1-2, 12-14 (NLT)

Give your love of justice to the king, O God,
and righteousness to the king’s son.
Help him judge your people in the right way;
let the poor always be treated fairly.

12 He will rescue the poor when they cry to him;
he will help the oppressed, who have no one to defend them.
13 He feels pity for the weak and the needy,
and he will rescue them.
14 He will redeem them from oppression and violence,
for their lives are precious to him.

Hail to the Lord’s Anointed

Hail to the Lord’s anointed!
Great David’s greater Son;
Hail in the time appointed,
His reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
To set the captive free;
To take away transgressions,
And rule in equity.

He comes, with justice speedy
To those who suffer wrong;
To help the poor and needy,
And bid the weak be strong;
To give them songs for sighing,
Their darkness turn to light,
Whose souls, condemned and dying,
Were precious in His sight.

He shall come down like showers
Upon the fruitful earth.
Love, joy, and hope, like flowers,
Spring in His path to birth.
Before him, on the mountains,
Shall peace, the herald go,
And righteousness, in fountains,
From hill to valley flow.

To him shall prayer unceasing
And daily vows ascend,
His kingdom still increasing,
A kingdom without end.
The tide of time shall never
His covenant remove.
His name shall stand forever,
That name to us is Love.

Prayer: Creator God, in this season of Advent, may we remember that your love and peace is for all humankind. May we have the strength, heart, and courage to love as you love us. We ask for your peace, grace, and mercy to be known in all of the world. Amen.
