LABC Update – Wednesday, December 4, 2024

One of the great religious leaders in the history of Oakland, Bishop John Cummins, died yesterday.
Of Bishop Cummins my colleague Father Aiden McAleenan wrote, “He was a father figure and mentor to me and many others. John was a Vatican II bishop with a great love for the people. He will be deeply missed. My heart is heavy.”
Colleague Father Jayson Landeza wrote, “Rest in peace Bishop John. Thank you for always being so good to us. Mahalo for your care to my mom when she worked at the chancery. thank you for your many calls, thoughtful notes, supportive messages, and of course, for ordaining me back in 1987.”
Great friend of Lakeshore Kathy Connelly (wife of Parkes Johnson) wrote, “Bishop Cummins died this morning. He was my speech coach at O’Dowd. Long friendship. Grateful.
We join in the prayers of gratitude for his life and ministry and prayers of grief at his passing.
