Public education is an imperfect platform for improving the world. Yet, it offers a path to a better world that other platforms do not. When done well, it helps students find their place as contributing members of society. It creates belonging, confidence and the ability to think.
Because public education matters, it is frequently under attack. As judge and pastor Wendell Griffen writes – It is important to remember that the present challenges facing public education in Arkansas, Florida, and elsewhere across the United States are not new. Although we have bragged for generations about how far society has come in desegregating public education, the current situation shows that we were mistaken, if not self-deceived.
