LABC Update – Tuesday, January 17, 2022
Family,
One of the hats I wear is President of the American Baptist Ministers Council of Northern California. The analogy is imperfect but the Ministers Council is something like a ministers union. We are committed to the well being of our profession as well as the well being of our profession. One of the things our national organization, The American Baptist Ministers Council does is to maintain a clergy code of ethics.
For the past several years the chapters of the national council have been reviewing a revised code of ethics and voting on approving it. On Saturday it was announced that sixteen of twenty eligible chapters voted, with the final vote being 15 Yes, 1 No, meaning the revised code will take effect on February 1, 2023.
The revised code begins with this paragraph.
Having accepted God’s call to leadership in Christ’s Church, I covenant with God to serve Christ and the Church, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, to deepen my obedience to the Two Great Commandments: to love the Lord our God with all my heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love my neighbor as myself.
The document then organizes the responsibility of American Baptists ministers under three headings, Centeredness, Competence and Collegiality. The new code is linked below.
