The poet Emily Dickinson reminds us that in God’s universe:
The Brain — is wider than the Sky —
For — put them side by side —
The one the other will contain
With ease — and You — beside —
The Brain is deeper than the sea —
For — hold them — Blue to Blue —
The one the other will absorb —
As Sponges — Buckets — do.
The brain is a precious gift indeed, a reservoir of the mind. Rabbi Hillel, a contemporary of Jesus, was once asked, “Why study Scripture so diligently?” He replied, “So that you will learn to love others as you would have others love you.” That, he said, “is the entire Torah, and the rest is its interpretation. Go study!” Go study, indeed! Both Hillel and Jesus, borrowing from Moses before them, would underscore the ultimate goal of all intense study is nothing less than this: “to love God with all your heart, soul and MIND and to love others as you love yourself!
