Midweek Message
LABC Update, Saturday, November 19, 2022
- Family,
Tomorrow the liturgical year reaches its conclusion with the celebration of Reign of Christ Sunday. Although I have not often paid great attention to this observance, I find it very important to do so this year.
The rise of authoritarian governments around the globe, the claims of near divine status by political, business, entertainment and religious celebrities, and the ever growing influence of white Christian Nationalism must be countered by the faith claim that the crucified and risen Christ alone is worthy of our deepest commitment, our ultimate allegiance.
The gospel for the day is Luke 23:33-43. This texts describes the crucifixion of Jesus. As he, and the two thieves with whom he is crucified, die excruciating deaths, one of the thieves reviles Jesus while the other pleads, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus answers, “This day you will be with me in paradise.”
This text raises the key questions:
1. What kind of king is Jesus?
2. What kind of kingdom does he lead ?
3. What kind of service does he require?
Likely, you can supply meaningful answers to these questions already. I will share mine with you tomorrow.
Peace,
Pastor Jim
