Calling out bad policyof Christian nationalism (A Letter to Editor, East Bay Times, Friday, August 26)
Thank you to Thomas Higgins for his timely analysis of the threat Christian nationalism poses to our society (“The idea of Christian nationalism is a malignant falsehood,” Page A6, Aug. 23). As a nation, we are stronger when we find unity in honest diversity rather than in an imposed unanimity. Those of us who belong to Christian communities know that our communities are stronger when we respect the gifts of other faiths.
Amanda Tyler, the executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty, reminds us that practitioners of Christian nationalism “rely heavily on a false narrative of America as a ‘Christian nation.’ This mythical history betrays the work of the framers to create a federal government that would remain neutral when it comes to religion, neither promoting nor denigrating it — a deliberate break with the state-established religions of the colonies.”
Higgins’ point is well-taken. Christian nationalism is bad policy buttressed by false history.
