LABC Update – November 29, 2023
November 28, 2023
Many of us are following the news from Gaza and Israel very closely. We are grateful that, for now, hostages are being released, aid is flowing and that there are no bombs dropping. We pray that the fragile ceasefire might be extended.
In Oakland on Monday, the city council unanimously passed a resolution calling on the US Congress to demand a ceasefire in Gaza. While I wrote the council asking that the resolution be amended to include condemnation of Hamas (that amendment was defeated 6-2) I acknowledge that the statement does deplore both antisemitism and Islamophobia and lifts up a vision for peace.
With others, I wonder if a city council with so many major problems to address should be spending time on a resolution regarding a conflict half a world away. Yet, I also recognize that the money being used to fund the the destruction of Gaza could make a huge difference if it were being used to build low income housing Oakland, a point made by Councilmember Nikki Fortunato Bas in a letter to President Biden.
Here is a link to a good article from Oaklandside about the resolution.
My longterm hope is that the attention on the current crisis will force all the actors in the region to work ever more earnestly on a diplomatic solution that addresses the right of both Palestinian and Israeli to live free of want and fear,
