LABC Update – March 9, 2022
Family,
The Tuesday Night and Wednesday Morning bible studies are reading from the first and second chapters of Hebrews this week.
Hebrews 1 (New International Version)
1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
The New Testament book of Hebrews is an ancient sermon, or extended word of encouragement, from an unknown author (Apollos? Barnabas?) to an audience at some distance (Rome?) that was undergoing some fierce harassment because of their faith in Jesus.
The message throughout is that Jesus is God’s word to that audience. Indeed, God’s word to us. Jesus is superior to any written word, prophetic insight or angelic message. Our faith is in the God that Jesus makes known to us.
This means that when we speak of the Word of God we are speaking of Jesus. The Bible is the record of God’s word. Jesus is God’s word.
There is comfort in this. The Bible can be confusing. It was written from a variety of perspectives over a long period of time. However, our faith is not in the perfection of the Bible or in our ability to understand it perfectly. Our faith is in Jesus, God’s living word who meets us where we are and tells us that we are held forever in God’s loving embrace.
