LABC Update – March 3, 2022

Jim Hopkins

March 2, 2022

Family,

Surrounded by the love of family and friends, Sheryl Gattey died yesterday morning at 11:13. In a prayer at her bedside I included the words of Paul found in Romans 14:8, “Whether we live or die, we belong to God.”

This is the essence of my theology of death, and maybe the essence of my theology in general. The mystery from which we are born is infused with the love of the Eternal One. The mystery to which we return is infused with that same love. Nothing in all creation can separate us from that love.

Sheryl found great meaning in the lyrics of the song “When the River Meets the Sea.” The closing verse reads – Like a baby when it is sleeping in its loving mother’s arms, what a newborn baby dreams is a mystery. But his (her) life will find a purpose and in time he’ll (she’ll) understand when the river meets the sea. When the river meets the almighty sea.

Peace on the journey,

Pastor Jim

P.S. Sydney Webster’s service to the Gattey family as their hospice chaplain was exemplary.
