LABC Update – March 10, 2022

Family,

This Sunday, in celebration of Women’s History Month, I will begin a sermon series titled “The Women Who Taught Jesus.” This week, his mother, Mary, will be the focus.

I started envisioning this series while reading Learning Jesus by longtime colleague Stephen D. Jones.

In the Introduction to his book Steve writes “If Jesus was an amazing teacher, did he not also have to be an amazing learner? This led to the question: Do the Gospels depict Jesus as a learner?”

Steve answers the question affirmatively, noting that the learning Jesus was also a Becoming Jesus. He reflects, “Like all of us, the Becoming Jesus had to grow into God’s destiny for his life. He had to make choices, he had to unlearn some biases that we part of his Nazarene upbringing, he had to cross barriers and boundaries, until, he was finally able in the midst of his ministry to embrace what God was calling him to do and be.”

Beginning this Sunday. I invite you to join me in an exploration, and a celebration, of the women who taught Jesus, who helped him embrace what God was calling him to do and be. I believe we can learn from them just as Jesus did.
