Family,

I find the news of the murder of Dr. Xu to be most troubling. I share the opening of the East Bay Times article in lament over the state of affairs in our city and as a prayer of longing for a better day.

OAKLAND — The death of a 60-year-old woman who was shot during an attempted armed robbery Sunday in the city’s Eastlake neighborhood drew cries of anger and fear Monday from elected officials and members of the Asian-American community.

Lili Xu, a Chinatown dentist, was visiting the neighborhood from another part of Oakland and sitting in a parked vehicle with a friend around 2 p.m. in an area of the city known as “Little Saigon” when a white older-model four-door Lexus pulled up alongside, authorities said Monday.

A gunman got out of the Lexus and tried to rob her near East 11th Street and Fifth Avenue. Moments later, the gunman shot her multiple times, then got back in the Lexus and fled the scene. The friend was unhurt, police said.
