LABC Update – April 27, 2022

Jim Hopkins

April 26, 2022

Family,

I am safely returned from the American Baptist Ministers Council of Northern California Retreat at Redwood Glen. Don and Lauren Ng did a wonderful job of leading us in a refreshing time of considering the power of story and the significance of the life-giving stories move us from me to you and from you to us.

I am now looking forward to May and our celebration of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. On the first three Sundays of May I will be preaching a sermon series honoring three AAPI leaders who have shaped, and are helping to shape, our American Baptist story. The schedule for the sermons follows.

Pastor Jim

May 1 (Service of Communion, Outreach Offering for Alliance of Baptists)
James Chuck – Keep It Simple
Micah 6:8
“Being a Christian is not about you and what you can accomplish for yourself. It’s about how you allow God to use you to enrich and bless the lives of others.” James Chuck

May 8 (Mother’s Day, Alean Saunders-Coffey book signing)
Lauren Ng – The Major Significance of Minor Victories
John 20:30
“I’ll build the border of a puzzle, stand from my desk before the sun starts its setting, remove backpacks from tired shoulders, plant kisses on cold cheeks and call it a day lived.” Lauren Ng

May 15
Jitsuo Morikawa – We Need Both Faith and Science
Luke 12:45
“It becomes very obvious that while every theologian cannot be a scientist, any more than every scientist becomes a theologian, there needs to be a relationship of mutuality – theologians need the insight of scientists and the scientists the insight of theologians.”
