Hugo and Hulissa holding over 50,000 signatures for a petition to Keep Hugo Home

Yesterday I stood with Hugo and Hulissa Aguilar outside ICE headquarters in San Francisco. We gathered to support the family as Hugo faces imminent deportation, to pray that ICE director David Jennings might use prosecutorial oversight to intervene and stop this deportation, and to deliver a package including over 50,000 signatures on a petition to keep Hugo home. This package also contained over 30 individual letters of support for Hugo, including one from Lakeshore Avenue Baptist Church.

Hugo has lived in the U.S. for over 20 years, has three children who are U.S. citizens, and an elderly, disabled mother whom he cares for. He is the sole provider for his daughter Hulissa, a 14-year-old straight A student who desperately needs her father for stability and support. Hugo has spent the past two decades contributing to society as a tax-payer and construction worker; he has helped build several buildings throughout the Bay Area. If he were to be deported back to Mexico, he would face violence and torture. Hugo belongs in the U.S. His family needs him and his community needs him.

Hugo’s deportation proceedings begin as early as next week. Please consider one of the following actions to help Keep Hugo Home:

  • Call and Email ICE Director David Jennings and San Francisco Chief of Staff Richard Chang – who have the authority to intervene and stop this deportation. Sample text below.
  • Sign the petition – we hope to collect 100,000 signatures by next week.
  • Watch and share this powerful 3-minute video made by Hulissa.
  • Offer a prayer that David Jennings eyes would be opened to the humanity of Hugo and Hulissa, that his ears would be opened to hear their pleas to stay together, and that his heart would fill with compassion and the courage to intervene.
  • Learn more about Hugo’s story, watch this CBS news summary of our action, and view yesterday’s Rally to Keep Hugo Home.

Thank you for enacting Lakeshore’s commitment to Sanctuary by helping keep the Aguilar family together.

Peace,

Allison
