Pentecost reminds us that every one us, the oldest and the youngest alike, are human beings with the capacity to thrive spiritually. Our Pentecost Sunday recognition of our graduates, from Miles Buffin and Madelein Templeton who are entering Kindergaten, to Jonny Ash who has completed Law School, was joyous witness to this universal truth. Thanks to all who played a role in the the celebration.
This coming Sunday is Fathers Day. The starting point of my sermon, taken from Colossians 3:18-21, is something my youngest son, Ethan, said of me a few years ago. “My Dad always made sure I had a ride home.” This may not have been the greatest compliment that could be paid to a father but I continue to find his words to be both encouraging and thought provoking.  In fact, I see at least three ways in which they serve to define the role of fathers:

  1. Practical – Fathers have a role in providing not only rides home but  homes to return to.
  2. Aspirational – It should be the aspiration of all Fathers that the homes they help provide are places of love and nurture. Colossians puts it this way. “Fathers to not provoke your children, or they may lose heart.”
  3. Spiritual – At a spiritual level all of us – fathers , sons, and  daughters alike – are trying to find our way home. On this journey we are fellow travelers and God is our source, our guide, and our goal.

The flute and guitar duo, Duo Boheme , featuring San Franciso Conservatory of Music graduates Courtney Wise and Lyle Sheffler, will be our guest musicians on Fathers Day.  Duo Boheme will also present a concert at LABC on Saturday evening, June 28 at 5:00.
