Public Witness

Good Friday

Good Friday Greetings,

If you, like me, are up early, I encourage you to join me for a Virtual Worship and Witness focused on Livermore Nuclear Weapons Laboratory at 7:45 a.m. I’ll be preaching on site, but the worshiping community will gather on this zoom link. You can view the program, song sheet, and other info on the Ecumenical Peace Institute’s webpage.

For those who cannot make it, I’d like to share my opening remarks, below.

This Good Friday, may we continue to minister to those who suffer, comfort those who mourn, and demand justice for those who are mistreated.

Peace,

Pastor Allison

I believe in peace, and I have committed my life to the ways that make for peace.

I believe there can be no real peace with the threat of nuclear weapons.

As a follower of Jesus’, I must take seriously the command to love my enemies – we cannot wage war or threaten nuclear annihilation to those we love, nor can we promote the existence of weapons that can kill billions and destroy the earth that gives us life.

As a follower of Jesus’, I must take seriously the command to love my neighbors – we cannot pour resources into war at the expense of the impoverished. With so many of our neighbors in need of homes, jobs, decent education, safety, and opportunity for their families, we cannot love our neighbors and also support warmongers and war       profiteers at their expense.

I believe in peace, and I have committed my life to the ways that make for peace.

I believe there can be no real peace with the threat of nuclear weapons.

Peace is not only our goal but also our means. The foundation of peace is justice. The force of peace is love.  — Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America/Bautistas por la Paz
