December 5, 2013
The holiday season is upon us, and along with it comes an abundance of ways to practice our faith amidst a multitude of mixed messages. A recent Facebook post illustrated well the challenges of the season:
Black Friday – because only in America people trample others for sales exactly one day after being thankful for what they already have.
It’s not that I don’t enjoy a good bargain – nor am I against Black Friday discounts – but I find my focus easily divided in December. I get caught up in the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations – and I forget to slow down and listen for God. I get overwhelmed with expectations of all that can be done – and I forget to appreciate all that I am able to experience. I get distracted by the over-emphasis of what I might receive during the holidays – and I forget to prioritize the importance of giving.
- In light of the need for my own grounding every December, I am ever grateful for the opportunities Lakeshore provides for me to practice my faith.
- Advent books are available, allowing me to slow down briefly each day and reflect on what God is doing in the midst of Christmas chaos.
- Weekly worship shifts my thoughts from all that needs done to how I can continue to worship the Christ-child in the midst of my community.
- Spending time with my church community reminds me that I am part of a community much bigger than myself, a community filled with people who are willing to help one another along the way.
- The Hunger Task Force provides a multitude of ways to share my resources with others, reminding me that God calls me to care for the larger community.
I invite you, as you wade through the distractions of December in your own lives, to participate with me in spiritual practices that allow us to keep the faith – even as we celebrate the season.
Peace,
Allison
