Cinco de Mayo 2015
Dear LABC Family,
There will be many themes in our worship this coming Sunday.
- We will celebrate Mother’s Day.
- My sermon will be “The Good Samaritan Was An Environmentalist,” the second sermon in my “Caring For Creation, Cared For By Creation” series.
- We will continue to participate in the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering with a particular focus on a caring response to the needs of the Nepalese people following the massive April 25 earthquake. Thank you for your generous outpouring of support already.
- We will continue to build support for our June 7 Hunger Walk.
There are at least three ways to interpret the Parable of the Good Samaritan in light of the need to be better caretakers of Creation. The first is to note that there is no better way to be a merciful Good Samaritan to our friends, as well as our enemies, than to enact polices and adopt practices that will guarantee that there is clean air, clean water and an equitable and sustainable distribution of natural resources for all. The second is to view the earth as the entity that has fallen among thieves and been attacked, beaten and left to die by the side of the road. It is our role to see to it that the earth is nursed back to health. The third is consider the ways in which the earth is our Good Samaritan, frequently rescuing us from disaster and restoring our weary bodies and broken spirits.
