Celebrating African American History

Allison Tanner

February 1, 2019

Dear Lakeshore Family,

Today marks the first day of our month long celebration of African American history, culture and contributions to our country. As an invitation to learn some history, we have reproduced the biographies Reverend Carolyn Matthews compiled last year – 28 bios for 28 days. They can be found on our church website, along with a list of special events we have planned for the month.

One of our biggest events will take place tomorrow, our African American Arts Festival, held in Barnett Hall from 10-4. There will be art exhibits, interactive art projects, local vendors, food for sale, live jazz music (11-1), a youth oratory context (1-2), and a book reading/signing (2 p.m.) featuring Reverend Harry William’s newest book, When the Struggle is Real: O.G. Rev’s Hip-Hop Prayers and Meditations.

African-American History Month provides important ways for us to connect with the liberating work of God in our world. I look forward to sharing in the activities, celebrations and educational opportunities that February has is store for us!

Peace,

Allison

PS – A huge thanks to the African American History Planning Committee for all their efforts to make February meaningful and memorable!
