Songs of Advent

The Advent of Our God
(This hymn of Advent was translated by Robert Campbell (1814-1868) et al, from Charles Coffin’s “Instantis adventum Dei”, which was published in the 1736 Paris Breviary)

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God.

Romans 5:1-2 (NRSV)

The Advent of Our God

The advent of our God
With eager prayers we greet;
With humble hearts we shall go forth,
God’s glorious gift to meet.

The everlasting Son
Incarnate deigns to be;
Himself a servant’s form puts on
To set all people free.

O Zion’s daughter, rise
To meet your lowly King.
Let not your faithless heart despise
The peace he comes to bring.

As Judge, on clouds of light,
Christ soon will come again,
And all the scattered saints unite,
In heav’n with Christ to reign.

Before the dawning day
Let sin’s dark deeds be gone;
The old self all be put away,
The new self all put on.

All glory to the Son,
Who comes to set us free,
With Father, Spirit, ever One,
Through all eternity.
